John was born in Princeton, NJ and was raised in the mainline Philadelphia area. He graduated from Auburn University in 1988 with a business degree and a minor in mathematics in addition to major class work in the engineering program. While attending law school in Virginia Beach, VA, he labored in the cotton fields of South Alabama doing crop-optimization summer work for several local cotton growers in Baldwin and surrounding counties and soon realized he would call South Alabama his home. In 1995 John joined the Baldwin County District Attorney's office as a full-time prosecutor and handled all child sex-abuse, domestic violence, and juvenile cases. In 1998, John opened up his own law practice focusing exclusively on all matters of criminal defense.

John has dedicated his professional life to defending citizens accused of potentially catastrophic criminal charges. He has tried over 100 jury trials with a phenomenal level of success. John bases this success on many factors: hard work and single-minded preparation, loyalty to his clients, and his courtroom presence.

Respected by his colleagues, his adversaries, and the judges has earned John an imcomparable reputation for getting results and as a leader in his local legal community. He has served as the President of the 400+ member of the Baldwin County Bar Association, President of the Baldwin County Criminal Defense Lawyers Association, Regional Vice President of the Alabama Criminal Defense Lawyers Association and he is a Life Member of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers.

In 2016, John received his highest professional honor when he was inducted as a Fellow with the American Board of Criminal Lawyers; an honor only shared with a small handful of other criminal defense lawyers in the United States. He has been AV rated by Martindale-Hubbell for many years and was inducted by the highly regarded and selective Best Lawyers in America in 2010.

John is a frequent guest on Law Call, a televised panel show. He has also lectured many times to other attorney organizations on issues relating to trial practice. In recent years he has collaborated with a Hollywood screenwriter in developing a groundbreaking and innovative system of incorporating effective storytelling elements directly into his trial preparation methodology.

Recent results speak volumes. Click here for a list of recent cases John has handled personally and the outcomes.

John, his wife Leslie, and their three children live in beautiful Fairhope, Alabama. In his spare time, John values his family time above all else. He enjoys ballgames, tennis lessons, coaching, traveling, painting, cooking, skiing, and other active pursuits.

"The most impressive lawyer ever! Honest and up front from beginning to end. Mr. Beck truly shines in the courtroom, thrilling to watch!!! Better than any lawyer, real or on tv. Mr. Beck does his homework and learns all the details of his client's case. Appears to be respected by both judge and attorneys on the other side. Cannot praise his skills enough." - Carol H.
